Improve Your Golf Game: Wood Chop Up

Rotational exercises are great for full body engagement and for learning to load and unload the body just like you want to do in the golf swing swing. They also represent many parts of the swing, which helps teach the body the right movement patterns.

This is one of my favorites, it requires the whole body to work together and build great core strength. If you would only have 10 minutes to work out I would do this exercise,3-5 sets of 8 reps.

Have the shoulders face the cable, or in this sequence use a med ball or rubber band with extended arms (not locked), keep the triangle between the arms and shoulders intact. Sit into your back leg with a loose grip and engage the abs. Initiate upward rotation from bottom up, starting with leg, then hip, shoulders, and arms. Get into a good finish position with full rotation, shoulders over hips and ankle and full extension (avoid a reverse C). Feel the weight transfer from the back to the front leg. Lower the rope, med ball or band slowly with arms extended and with shoulders relaxed, making sure that the abs protect the back and control the speed.

Getting Back on Track…

Not an easy task after a month away from home, a ton of comfort food and a lack of fitness in my life.

WOW,  this is coming from a nutrition coach and personal trainer?

Yes, and it seems to happens to the best of us. I spent a month in Germany taking care of my dad. He sadly passed away 2 weeks ago and he’ll be greatly missed.

I’m sure many of you have experienced that same emotional roller coaster and the inability to move and the urge to eat! You might find some of my insight helpful for your own life. I saw this quote from Jim Rhon  this morning and it inspired me to get going again in my quest for healthy living.

“It’s a new day, a new beginning for your new life. With discipline you will be amazed at how much progress you’ll be able to make. What have you got to lose except the guilt and fear of the past?” — Jim Rohn

I used to teach a cycling class on Monday mornings and it got me going for the week. I’m taking a break from teaching at the moment but I miss the routine it provided having to sit on the bike ready to roll at a certain time. Without that time commitment I can easily postpone that workout or skip it altogether…but Jim’s reminder of being disciplined got me going into the garage, pumping some much needed air into my mountain bike and circling the neighborhood in the early morning. I keep reminding myself that time will heal all wounds and little steps into the right direction will get me back on track.

Nutritional Demands for Soccer Players

As soccer parents we spend a lot of time and money to help our kids improve their soccer game? We join a professional club in town, incorporate strength training, buy the best gear and drive miles on end to and from practices, games and tournaments. A lot of times we forget to pay attention to our athlete’s nutrition? Working with teenage athletes for many years now, I see that nutrition often is the missing link in improving performance.

Are You Still Doing Cardio?

Walk into any gym and the first thing you see is people straddling treadmills, elliptical machines or bikes for 45 minutes or more, trying to burn calories and improve their aerobic fitness (all while watching their favorite show on TV).

I see and hear this all the time, especially from the ladies, this notion that you need a good long sweat in order to get a good workout and burn lots of calories. I suspect that some people are actually addicted to that type of cardio workout.

It is not easy to convince people why they should steer away from the typical low- to moderate-intensity continuous training (cardio) and instead do sprint interval training (also known as HIIT, or burst training). After all, we have been conditioned by many alleged fitness experts and health professionals to believe we need  several 30 to 45 minutes sessions of cardiovascular training every week to stay fit, healthy and burn fat.
